उत्तर प्रदेश के आजमगढ़ के सरायमीर इलाके में जन्मे अबु सलेम ने परिवार की आर्थिक तंगी को देखते हुए 12वीं पास करने के बाद दिल्‍ली में ड्राइवर की नौकरी की. फिर वह मुंबई पहुंचा और वहां भी उसने टैक्सी चलाई. इसके अलावा ब्रेड की डिलीवरी की और कपड़े की दुकान में भी हाथ आजमाया. फिर वह रियल एस्टेट ब्रोकर के तौर पर काम करने लगा. साल 1987 में अबू सलेम, अंडरवर्ल्‍ड डॉन दाऊद इब्राहिम से किसी तरह मिला और फिर धीरे धीरे उसका राइट हैंड बन गया. इसके बाद तो उसकी जिंदगी ऐसी पलटी कि उसे मुंबई का डॉन कहा जाने लगा.

• Mukhtar Ansari is an Indian politician who has a stronghold in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, a region popularly called “Purvanchal,” where Ansari is considered one of the most influential mafia dons.

• He was born into an influential Sunni Muslim family of Ghazipur.

He is the grandson of Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari (a former President of the Indian National Congress and Mulsim League). Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari was an Indian Freedom Fighter who later became one of the founders of the Jamia Millia Islamia University and served as its chancellor from 1928 to 1936. ^[9]

• Besides contract works, Ansari also expanded his influence in other activities, such as extortion, kidnapping, and extraction of protection money called ‘Goonda Tax.’

• Soon, Mukhtar Ansari and Brijesh Singh became two main gang rivals in Eastern Uttar Pradesh called Purvanchal. 

• Once in a clash between Ansari gang and Brijesh gang, Ansari presumed Brijesh to be dead. However, Brijesh was later found to be alive. The incident happened on the Mau-Lucknow highway in 2001 when Brijesh Singh ambushed Ansari’s convoy and killed his three key men. In the shootout, Brijesh was also critically injured.

• In the 2002 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, BJP’s Krishnanand Rai defeated Ansari’s brother, Afzal, from the Mohammadabad constituency. Krishnanand Rai, being a close aide of Brijesh Singh, allotted to Brijesh almost all government contracts, which triggered Ansari, and on 29 November 2005, Krishnanand Rai was killed in mafia-style.

• In the Krishnanand Rai murder case, Mukhtar Ansari was named in an F.I.R. filed at the Ghazipur police station, and he was arrested and lodged in jail; however, on 3 July 2019, after witnesses against him turned hostile, he was released. ^[12]

MUMBAI: Arun Gulab Gawli, also known as Daddy, has a battery of criminal cases against him, but unlike his crime contemporaries, he’s never made any attempt to escape from India. He lived in his house at Dagdi chawl near Byculla station until his arrest in the Jamsandekar case in 2008. Gawli was arrested several times earlier and spent periods behind bars, but he was acquitted as witnesses did not depose against him. In the 90s, he founded the Akhil Bharatiya Sena and was elected MLA in 2004. He has remained in jail since 2008, and now has to spend his entire life there. The last time he stepped out was in 2015, when he took leave of parole to attend his son’s wedding in Dagdi chawl.

Gawli had entered the world of crime in the mid-70s as part of the gang led by Rama Naik and Babu Resham that used to ensure the smuggled items of the Dawood Ibrahim gang are secure. In the late 1980s, Naik was killed and Gawli, the most senior in the gang, took its reins. As the ambitious gangster spread his wings in central Mumbai, he came into conflict with bigger don Dawood. Gawli’s gang now was involved in extorting money from businessmen, hoteliers, developers and so on in Parel, Dadar, Byculla, Chinchpokli and other parts of central Mumbai.
The tussle between D-gang, the most powerful in the city, and Gawli turned very ugly after four of Gawli’s gangsters shot Dawood’s brother in-law, Ibrahim Parkar, in 1992 (see graphic). Dawood’s gang retaliated by shooting Shailesh Haldankar, Parkar’s assassin, while he was recuperating at J J Hospital under the guard of two police constables.
In 2004, Gawli became Byculla MLA. His party, ABS, already had his close aide Sunil Ghate and his sister in-law as corporators. But his downfall was imminent. Just two weeks after being elected MLA, Gawli assaulted a journalist who had gone to interview him. This led to the first FIR against him as MLA for alleged criminal intimidation and wrongful confinement. The police deployed huge manpower around the chawl and arrested Gawli. He got bail, but a few months later, he was booked in an extortion case that led to arrest.Gawli, now 65, was born in Kopargaon in Ahmednagar district and had married Asha, a Pune resident, after falling in love with her. The couple has a son, Mahesh, and daughter, Geeta, who’s kept the ABS flag flying. She has been a corporator but lost the 2019 assembly election. Gawli’s nephew Sachin Ahir, a former minister, recently joined Shiv Sena. A Hindi film, Daddy, based on his life was released in 2017.

• Gawli was born into a poor family who used to live in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, but in the early 1950s, they shifted to Dagdi Chawl, Mumbai.

Dilip Buwa (1966–16 November 1991) was a notorious Indian gangster who used to work for the D-Company, an international crime syndicate of the Mumbai underworld led by Dawood Ibrahim. He was killed in 1991 by an encounter during the Lokhandwala Complex shootout. Buwa was killed by then Additional Police Commissioner of Mumbai, Aftab Ahmed Khan. Buwa was portrayed by Tusshar Kapoor in the Bollywood film Shootout at Lokhandwala.

Maya Dolas was just reckless and foul mouthed. Dilip Buwa was cold blooded. Unlike Dolas, nothing could divert Buwa’s attention when his fingers were on the trigger. He was a mentor to Chhota Rajan. Post shootout media coverage made out Dolas to be the big gun. “It was far from the truth. Dolas just kept hurling abuses from inside the building, while there being pumped by Buwa. I knew nothing about Maya Dolas, except his reputation. Buwa was something else. He was Dawood Ibrahim’s best shooter and his most efficient killer. Till date, there has been no second.” ^[2]

Buwa was the bodyguard of Ramabhai Naik, another famous gangster in Central Mumbai. He was paid off by Chotta Rajan, a former associate of Dawood Ibrahim. While visiting Chembur, Buwa turned and shot Naik dead. He then switched sides to the Dawood Ibrahim gang. Conversely, Maya Dolas was a member of a gang led by Arun Gawli. In an agreement between Amar Naik and Arun Gawli, they agreed to settle their disputes, but in return Amar wanted Dolas dead. When Dolas found out he escaped and joined with Buwa and the D-Company.
