Addressing employees of Adani Digital Labs, a newly incubated division under Adani Enterprises, Gautam Adani said that the company must be the “Ferrari of the digital world.” Adani said that the idea to create a super app took a shape in January this year when two people from the business team showcased a mockup version of the super app to Adani. “Seeing the demo unfold, it took me less than 30 minutes to decide that we must become a player in this space,” Adani added. The group boasts of over 400 Mn mix of consumers that engage at multiple levels with an Adani forum or service including Adani airport, Adani Wilmar, Adani total gas, Adani electricity, among others. He said it was ‘no brainer that a unified digital platform-based approach was required to leverage the ‘unprecedented possibilities’ in this space.
The group appointed Nitin Sethi as the first employee for the newly formed Digital Labs as a chief digital officer on April 1, 2021. Other companies under the group’s portfolio, including Vistara, Air India, Titan, Tanishq, and Tata Motors will join the app soon, Chandrasekaran said.
Tata Neu also offers third-party labels such as Levi’s denims, Skechers shoes and cosmetic brands Colorbar and Maybelline. Shoppers can also buy Mi TV sets and Apple Airpods.
Pratik Pal, chief executive of Tata Digital, said the app offers over a dozen consumer brands.
“The journey of Tata Neu has begun with a cumulative consumer base of 120 million users, 2,500 offline stores, along with an 80 million app footprint across our digital assets,” he said.
The app allows users to log in with just a name and mobile number and uses the device’s biometrics such as fingerprint sensors on Android phones and face ID on iPhones to secure access to the app.
The app also records purchase histories from the company’s pre-existing databases for existing Tata customers. As a result, the app will give a customer who has stayed in a Tata hotel or already uses BigBasket, Tata Cliq, etc., a digital reward in the form of “Neu Coins”, which can be redeemed against purchases made on Tata Neu.
Customers can “spend these new coins across any category”, the company statement said.
The super app also offers consumers a rewards programme—NeuPass.
“Members earn 5% NeuCoins or more every time they shop, dine, or travel via Tata Neu. 1 NeuCoin equals ₹1, and consumers enjoy limitless freedom to earn NeuCoins on all categories and spend these NeuCoins across any category,” the company said.
In addition, NeuPass members will also get free deliveries, exclusive offers, a built-in credit line, early access to product launches and brand-specific privileges.
At the moment, though, the NeuCoins don’t show up on the other apps that Tata has. However, the Tata Neu app runs Big Basket, Cliq and others in a containerized form, which means that these apps sort of live inside the Neu app.
This is much the same implementation that Paytm had done last year when it launched the Paytm Mini App Store. The difference here is that Tata is tapping into its own apps only, at least for now.
Tata group’s super app comes at a time India’s retail landscape is transforming, with the pandemic having pushed more people to shop online. India’s e-commerce market is set to touch $88 billion by FY25, commanding nearly 8% of the overall retail market. Categories such as food and grocery are expected to touch $28 billion, while consumer electronics will be a $20 billion opportunity online, according to a report by consulting firm Technopak.
In May last year, Tata Digital acquired a 64.3% stake in online grocer BigBasket for ₹9,500 crore, citing accelerated adoption of e-grocery. It also acquired digital pharmacy 1mg and signed a deal to invest up to $75 million in CureFit Healthcare.
Anand Ramanathan, partner, Deloitte India, said given the app fatigue, it makes immense sense for a large conglomerate to have a super app.
“A super app optimizes all of the technology you have across multiple businesses to reach the customer, and your ability to get a 360-degree view of her consumption improves. If done well, the benefits are enormous, but the execution is very complex because you have to navigate through different silos and legacy systems,” he said.
Besides, the back-end integration can help supply chains, Ramanathan said, adding, “You will have visibility on inventory across multiple businesses, and if you aggregate their requirements, then economies of scale will kick in.”
Clicking on the Neu app’s grocery category taps into Big Basket’s inventory, while the electronics category taps into the Croma store.
Interestingly, while the app is tapping into existing Tata services, it has its own built-in payment mechanisms.
Though a version of BigBasket or Cliq runs outside the Neu app, customers won’t have to leave the Neu app to make payments.
This could be useful for Tata in the long run if the company chooses to follow business models set by Chinese super-app giants like WeChat and more. In China, super apps often allow third parties to tap into their user base, making them gatekeeper platforms. In addition, payment services are built into these super apps, allowing third parties to cut costs and use those services instead, paying a fee for such payments.
At the moment, the Tata Neu app, much like Reliance Jio’s MyJio, depends on its own services and platforms.
This is where Paytm, backed by China’s Alibaba, differs. The company’s Mini App Store allows third parties to tap into Paytm’s services and customer base. Neu also doesn’t have games and movie streaming services, which are available on the MyJio app.

A report by 91mobiles revealed the potential download and upload speed at Jio 5G network. As per the report, Jio 5G internet speed during the pilot testing was 8x faster than Jio 4G speed. The report highlights that the Jio 5G network achieved a download speed of 420Mbps and an upload speed of 412Mbps during pilot testing. Moreover, the network had a latency of 11ms and 9ms jitters. For your comparison, the Jio 4G download speed is around 46.82 Mbps and the upload speed is around 25.31 Mbps. This simply means that the Jio 5G download speed is 8x faster and the upload speed is 15X faster as compared to Jio’s 4G network.

The government of India is yet to allocate a 5G spectrum to the telecom operators in India. Airtel claims that it is ready to rollout 5G services in India as soon as the spectrum auction takes places and the government provides the required permissions. The spectrum auction for 5G is expected in May this year. The telecom operator has spent the last 15 months preparing the required infrastructure for 5G connectivity and believes it is ready to provide the services, company’s CTO Randeep Sekhon told India Today Tech on Thursday, on the sidelines of a event where Airtel demonstrated how 5G can shape the future of interactive sports entertainment by re-creating Kapil Dev’s famous 175 not out from the 1983 World Cup.
“Now, the 5G rollout is very close. The government is pushing for the auction date. Once they give us the spectrum, we will start the rollout. We have spent the last 15 months putting together the right infrastructure for it,” Sekhon said.
The last 12 months haven’t been easy for telecom operators. We have seen all major telcos increase the prices of their 4G data plans in India during this period. However, Sekhon is hopeful that 5G plans will not cost significantly more than the existing 4G plans. He gave the example of other markets where customers don’t have to pay a premium for 5G services.
“We will know the final costs only after the spectrum auction. If you look at other markets, where operators are already proving 5G, we haven’t seen them charging a premium for it over 4G,” he said.
The first set of 5G phones were launched in India almost two years ago. We are yet to see the network support for them. This leaves the users with an interesting choice to make – 4G phones with high-end specifications or 5G phones with some cut-downs. Asked about this, Sekhon said that customers make smart choices. Some of them are waiting for the 5G rollout to happen before buying a new phone. He added that phones should also be evolved by them and you would have 5G with the latest specs.
Airtel used the event to showcase its 5G’s high-speed, low latency capabilities. It used the 5G network to recreate the in-stadia experience of Kapil Dev’s famous 175 not out vs Zimbabwe, during the 1983 Cricket World Cup. The video was played in 4K mode, and brought key moments from the match to life, which had no video footage due to a strike by TV technicians. It was played at a high internet speed of over 1 Gbps and a latency of under 20 ms. However, the real world speed may differ.
Sekhon believes that 5G will have many cases, but, the entertainment part will also depend on the support provided by content providers.
“5G will ensure that we have really fast internet speed. Let’s say we are working from home or want to stream 4K videos but don’t have a fiber connection, then 5G will ensure fast internet speed. As far as content consumption and a more immersive experience go, we will need content providers for that,” he said.
Bharti Airtel (“Airtel”), India’s premier communications solutions provider, today said that it has successfully conducted India’s first 5G trial in the 700 MHz band in partnership with Nokia. Airtel has been allotted test spectrum in multiple bands by the government’s Department of Telecommunications for the validation of 5G technology and use cases.
The demonstration, which was conducted on the outskirts of Kolkata, was also the first 5G trial in Eastern India.
