Both devices are powered by AppleтАЩs A10 Fusion chip, a 64-bit architecture the company says is 40 percent faster than the A9 in the iPhone 6S and the 6S Plus. Apple says itтАЩs 120 times faster than the original iPhone. Both have a┬аquad-core processor, which was a first for iPhone when these phones came out. Two cores are for┬аhigh-performance actions, and the other two are designed for tasks where efficiency is more important. An Apple-designed performance controller determines which actions make use of either set of cores. Checking your email, for example, will most likely be powered by the high-efficiency cores, which saves battery life.
Graphics performance is up to 50 percent faster than the A9, according to Apple. Performance is a tie between the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, and the same goes for┬аinternal storage options тАФ both devices come with 32, 128, and 256GB options. The pair also have stereo speakers, making them equals in audio output as well.
The iPhone 7 has 2GB of RAM, but┬аthe┬аPlus model has 3GB. That gives the Plus a slight edge over the regular 7.
Battery life is better on the iPhone 7 Plus because its larger┬аsize can accommodate a slightly larger battery. You get an additional hour of internet use on LTE on the Plus model. Both are charged via the Lightning cable and sadly thereтАЩs no support for wireless charging.
DESIGN AND DURABILITY
The overall design of both┬аis similar to that┬аintroduced with┬аthe iPhone 6. Apple hit home the тАЬseamlessтАЭ design that blends the glass on the front and the rear┬аcase, and thatтАЩs partly due to a relocation of the antenna bands тАФ theyтАЩre now on the top and bottom edges of the devices.
The buttons are in the same place, but the home button is no longer a button. The new Force Touch home button acts like the Force Touch trackpad on the┬аMacBook ProтАФ youтАЩll feel a Taptic vibration whenever you push down on it.
The camera, which still juts out a bit, is┬аwhere youтАЩll find the main design difference between the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus (aside from size).┬аThe 7 Plus has a new dual-camera system, whereas the 7 only has a single rear camera.
Both models┬аcome in rose gold, gold, silver, black, and a high-gloss jet black variant.
The jet black model┬аbrings us to durability. Due to its high-gloss nature, itтАЩs the only color option that Apple recommended you get a case for, because itтАЩs prone to scratches. ThatтАЩs right тАФ the company showcased and praised the jet black finish, but wanted you to cover it up with a case. Go figure. Apple has now discontinued this jet black color option.
Still, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are IP67 rated, meaning theyтАЩre water- and dust-resistant. You can take them underwater up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, though the ratingтАЩs intent is to protect the device from accidental water damage.
DISPLAY
But the Retina HD LED screens are better than ever before тАФ Apple says the displays on both devices are 25 percent brighter and display a wider color gamut. So┬аthe comparison┬аhere really comes down to size. If you want a larger screen, go for the iPhone 7 Plus. If you want a smaller screen, the iPhone 7 is the smartphone for you. Although, itтАЩs worth noting that the iPhone 7 Plus screen is also significantly sharper.
Winner: iPhone 7 Plus
CAMERA
This is the meat of the comparison┬аbetween the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, and the bigger variant wins it easily.┬аThe iPhone 7 Plus is the phone you should get if you want a┬аbetter camera experience, and thatтАЩs because of its dual-camera system.
ThatтАЩs not to say the iPhone 7тАЩs camera isnтАЩt good тАФ far from it. The 12-megapixel rear camera features a 28-mm wide-angle lens with an f/1.8 aperture. ItтАЩs 60 percent faster than the camera on the 6S, while also 30 percent more energy efficient. Even the True Tone flash has gotten an upgrade that offers up to 50 percent more light.
The cameras can identify faces and bodies, and they also offer wide color capture. ThereтАЩs even┬аsupport for RAW image format, allowing for more control when editing photographs.
The front camera has a f/2.2 aperture and is packed with 7 megapixels. It has automatic image stabilization, whereas the rear is optically stabilized.
Take all of that and add it to the iPhone 7 Plus, except add another 12-megapixel rear camera. The second camera on the rear is a 56mm telephoto lens with a f/2.8 aperture. It essentially lets you zoom in on images, up to 10 times, with spectacular clarity and quality. Still, optical zoom is utilized until the 2x mark. Anything higher than that is a digital zoom.
ThereтАЩs also an exciting blur feature, or bokeh, coming via a software update. It uses┬аthe dual-lens and some software tinkering to recognize the subject in a photo and blur out the background, like on DSLRs with wide apertures. It offers more depth to images, but you can turn this feature on or off. YouтАЩre also able to see a live preview before you take a shot.
The iPhone 7тАЩs camera is great. But if youтАЩre looking to choose one over the other, and photography is a top factor, get the iPhone 7 Plus.
SOFTWARE AND UPDATES
Both these iPhones were released with iOS 10, but have since been updated to iOS 12, and we expect them to continue getting updates for a while longer. The software experience is identical, aside from the larger screen in the iPhone 7 Plus and some extra options in the camera app.
PRICE
The iPhone 7 starts at $449 for the 32GB model and costs $549 for the 128GB model. Apple doesnтАЩt offer the 256GB model anymore.
The iPhone 7 Plus costs┬а$569 and also has the same color and storage options тАФ the 128GB model costs $669.
YouтАЩll also be able to find both devices at a wide range of carriers and retailers and itтАЩs worth hunting around for a bargai
However, even though they may not have major differences visible to the naked eye — there nevertheless are major differences between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S.

External Differences
The iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S models all use the same general all stainless steel body design and a thin “metal band” that wraps around the sides of each phone. However, the iPhone 4 (GSM) models and the iPhone 4S have an access panel on the right side (and an enclosed┬аMicro SIM┬аcard) and the iPhone 4 (CDMA) does not have an access panel or a SIM card.
Additionally, the iPhone 4 (GSM) models have three antenna “breaks” in the metal band (one on the top and one on each side toward the bottom) and the iPhone 4 (CDMA) and iPhone 4S have four (two on both sides toward the top and bottom).
The rear camera also has considerably better specs on the iPhone 4S — capable of shooting 8 megapixel stills and 1080p 30 FPS video. The older iPhone 4 models, by contrast, are capable of shooting 5 megapixel still photos and 720p 30 FPS video. Both lines have a VGA quality front-facing camera designed for use with Apple’s “FaceTime” software (although it works equally well with third-party applications like Skype). The camera in the iPhone 4S is faster, too, and is ready to take photos within a second of launch and additional photos within a half second.
Identification Differences
One simple way to externally┬аidentify┬аthe iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S models, as well as other many other iPhone models, is by the┬аModel Number┬аlisted in small type on the back of the phone.
Specifically, the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S model numbers are:If the iPhone will boot, it may be even easier to lookup any of these models by┬аOrder Number┬аwith Everyi.com’s┬аUltimate iLookup┬аfeature or the┬аEveryMac app┬а(available foriOS 5 or later┬аand┬аAndroid). Apple refers to the order number as “Model” in software. To find the “Model” select the “Settings” app and then click General > About > and scroll until the field is visible.
Everyi.com’s┬аUltimate iLookup┬аand the┬аEveryMac app┬аalso can identify these iPhone models by┬аEMC Number┬аand their┬аSerial Numbers.
Battery Life Differences
Battery life has changed a bit between the iPhone 4S and the previous iPhone 4 models. All of these models provide an Apple estimated 40 hours of audio playback, 10 hours of video playback and 6 hours of Internet use on 3G, but Apple has increased the official battery life estimates for the iPhone 4S to 8 hours of talk time on 3G (up from 7 hours on the iPhone 4 models) and reduced the official Internet use on Wi-Fi (9 hours down from 10 hours). Standby time also has been reduced from 300 hours to 200.
In┬а“real world” testing, these differences are muted for most tasks, but the difference in battery life during 3D gaming use is the downside to the significantly improved performance of the iPhone 4S for graphics tasks.
Wireless Connectivity & Data Differences
A major point of differentiation is that the iPhone 4S is a dual-antenna equipped “world phone” that supports┬аboth┬аGSM and CDMA networks — UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), and CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz) — and the “antenna automatically switches between send and receive.” It supports 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0, too. HSDPA is up to a theoretical maximum of 14.4 Mbps.
AnandTech┬аhas additional┬аinformation┬аabout the iPhone 4S antenna capabilities that also may be of interest.
By contrast, the earlier iPhone 4 models support either GSM or CDMA networks, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and only support a maximum theoretical HSDPA download speed of 7.2 Mbps.
Unfortunately, it also is worth noting that Apple has disabled the CDMA capability on unlocked iPhone 4S models purchased in the United States.
Internal Differences
Internally, the iPhone 4S is considerably more powerful — with a dual-core Apple A5 processor compared to a single core Apple A4 processor on the iPhone 4 models — although the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S both have 512 MB of RAM. Apple reports that the iPhone 4S is twice as fast overall and has seven times the graphics performance, and independent benchmarks and testing┬аlargely confirm┬аthis claim.
Capacity was increased to 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB for the iPhone 4S, compared to 16 GB and 32 GB for the originally offered iPhone 4 models. However, Apple later offered 8 GB configurations of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S alike.
iOS Support & Software Differences
Both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S are capable of running iOS 5,┬аiOS 6, and┬аiOS 7, but specific features supported by each operating system are different on each device.
The iPhone 4 fully supports iOS 5, but only partially supports iOS 6 and iOS 7. The iPhone 4S, on the other hand, fully supports iOS 5 and iOS 6, but only partially supports iOS 7,┬аiOS 8, and┬аiOS 9. The┬аiPhone 4 does not support iOS 8 or later at all and the iPhone 4S does not support iOS 10 or later at all.
Perhaps most notably, regardless of iOS version, only the iPhone 4S is capable officially of running “Siri,” Apple’s acquired “intelligent assistant” software program that endeavors to parse naturally spoken questions and provide voice answers using the web as its source and perform basic software tasks as well (like adding an appointment to a calendar or preparing and sending a text message). In the “real world,” Siri doesn’t always┬аperform┬аperfectly, but it still can be useful.
Running iOS 6, the iPhone 4 supports an “Offline Reading List” feature as well as Find My iPhone and Find My Friends capabilities, but it does not support Turn-by-Turn Navigation, Flyover, Panorama photographic mode, or “Made for iPhone” hearing aids like the iPhone 4S.
Running iOS 7, the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S alike┬аdo not support┬аAirDrop. However, both devices support all basic functionality — Control Center, Notification Center, and Multitasking, as well as Safari and iTunes Radio — in addition to “Filters in Photos” and an assortment of photo functionality that Apple refers to as “Square and video formats and swipe to capture.” Just as it does running iOS 6, the iPhone 4S still supports Panorama and┬аSiri, and it supports new “Filters in Camera” functionality in iOS 7, whereas the iPhone 4 does not.
Running iOS 8, the iPhone 4S most notably is┬аnot compatible┬аwith the “Continuity” feature and running iOS 9, feature support is bare bones at best. It doesn’t support advanced operating system features like predictive Siri, third-party Spotlight search, public transit directions in Maps and more. Performance also is slower running iOS 8 or iOS 9 compared to iOS 7.
iOS Performance Differences
Based on hands-on experience, if performance is most important to you, you should run iOS 7 on your iPhone 4S. The iPhone 4S is┬аa bit slower┬аrunning iOS 8 and┬аeven slower┬аrunning iOS 9. However, application support for iOS 7 has become more and more of an issue since it was discontinued. If application compatibility is more important to you than performance, iOS 8 or iOS 9 are your only option short of buying a newer iPhone.
On July 11, 2008, Apple released the iPhone 3G across twenty-two countries in two storage options, 8GB and 16GB. The 16GB model was produced in either black or white.[11][12]
Following the release of the successor┬аiPhone 3GS┬аmodel one year later, the iPhone 3G remained on sale but became Apple’s budget phone offer, with its price cut in half. This $99 iPhone 3G required a two-year contract and was available only in black and with 8 GB of storage, but came bundled with the then-new iPhone OS 3.0 firmware.[13]┬аOn June 7, 2010, the iPhone 3G was finally discontinued, and replaced as Apple’s budget phone by an 8GB iPhone 3GS selling for the same price of $99 with a 2-year contract.
Software[edit]

The iPhone 3G came preloaded with the latest version of iPhone OS, and continued to receive updates to its software for over two years, with major iterations released on an annual basis. However, the phone had access to a decreasing proportion of new features with each update as its hardware became superseded by later models.
When it was launched, the iPhone 3G came preloaded with┬аiPhone OS 2.0. This introduced the App Store, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support, AppleтАЩs MobileMe service, and push email support, along with other new features and bug fixes.
In June 2009, iPhone 3G users received the┬аiPhone OS 3.0┬аsoftware update, which introduced the long-awaited┬аMMS┬аfeature, copy and paste, landscape support for more applications,┬аBluetooth┬аstereo support, and other improvements.
In June 2010, Apple released the┬аiOS 4.0┬аsoftware update. Unlike its successor models, the iPhone 3G does not support prominent features of iOS 4.0 such as multitasking, the ability to set a home screen wallpaper, or Bluetooth keyboard support. However, it does provide access to a unified mailbox feature, homescreen folders to better organize apps, playlist creation, and other enhancements. This update was widely criticized for slow performance on iPhone 3G, though September 2010’s iOS 4.1 release resolved this problem. However, unlike more modern iOS devices, this update again does not provide iPhone 3G owners with access to important features, in this case the Game Center application.[14]
On November 22, 2010, the iPhone 3G received the iOS 4.2 software update (as iOS 4.2.1), which introduced features such as YouTube voting, and security fixes. However, the iPhone 3G is unable to use many features included in this update, such as AirPlay and Safari Text Search. This is the last iOS release to support this iPhone model; iOS 4.3 and later are not compatible with this iPhone model due to hardware limitations and performance issues.[15]
Hardware[edit]
Main article:┬аiPhone hardware
Design[edit]
A rear view of the┬аoriginal iPhone(left) made of aluminum and plastic, and the iPhone 3G, made entirely from a hard plastic material.[16]
The iPhone 3G’s back featured a redesigned┬аpolycarbonate┬аplastic housing, replacing the aluminum back of the first generation. Buttons were changed from plastic to metal, and the edges of the phone were tapered, providing a better grip. The iPhone 3G introduced the first official color options for the outer casing, with the 16GB version available in black and white.
The dimensions of the iPhone 3G were marginally larger than those of the original iPhone. It was 116 millimetres (4.6┬аin) high, 62 millimetres (2.4┬аin) wide, and 12 millimetres (0.47┬аin) deep, compared to its predecessor, which was 110 millimetres (4.3┬аin) high, 61 millimetres (2.4┬аin) wide, and 12 millimetres (0.47┬аin) deep.
The iPhone 3G sported a 3.5┬аin (89┬аmm) capacitive touchscreen with a 480├Ч320 (HVGA) resolution at 163┬аppi. The scratch-resistant glass sits on top of the display. Just like the original iPhone, the touchscreen was designed for a bare finger, or multiple fingers for multi-touch sensing. The device featured the same sensors as its predecessor. The proximity sensor (which deactivates the display during calls when the face is near) was repositioned to save battery power and to prevent inadvertent inputs from the userтАЩs face and ears. An ambient light sensor was included to adjust the display brightness for different lighting conditions, which helps save battery power. A 3-axis┬аaccelerometer┬аwas included to sense the orientation of the phone and change the screen accordingly, allowing the user to easily switch between portrait and landscape mode.
Processor and memory[edit]
Most of the iPhone 3G’s internal hardware is based on the original┬аiPhone. It still includes a┬аSamsung┬а32-bit┬аRISC┬аARM11┬а620┬аMHz processor (underclocked to 412┬аMHz), a┬аPowerVR┬аMBX Lite 3D┬аGPU, and 128 MB of┬аpackage on package┬а(PoP)┬аDRAM.
Rear camera[edit]
On the rear of the device, the iPhone 3G features the same fixed-focus 2.0┬аmegapixel┬аcamera of its predecessor. This camera does not have optical zoom, flash, autofocus, or native video recording, although various applications became available to allow video recording on the device. The iPhone 3G’s operating system supports the┬аgeotagging┬аof photographs.
Connectivity[edit]
In addition to EDGE, the iPhone 3G supports┬аAssisted GPS,┬а3G┬аdata, and┬аtri-band┬аUMTS/HSDPA. These enhancements allow faster data downloads and┬аturn-by-turn navigation┬аwith maps compared to previous devices.
Like its predecessor, the iPhone 3G features a proprietary 30-pin dock connector for charging the device. It can also be used to synchronize the device with a computer and to connect various accessories.
The iPhone 3G features a flush-mounted 3.5┬аmm headphone jack instead of the recessed headphone jack that was included on the original iPhone; it could therefore be used with any headphones other than those provided by Apple.
Battery[edit]
The iPhone 3G features an internal rechargeable battery rated at 1150 mAh, which, like its predecessor, is not user-replaceable. Apple stated that the iPhone 3GтАЩs battery is capable of providing up to six hours of web browsing via Wi-Fi, or five hours via 3G, or 25 hours of audio playback. Alternatively, it is said to provide 300 hours of standby time.
