Describe a rule that you don’t like.
What it is?
Why you don’t like it?
How others feel about the rule?
And explain whether you’ve followed the rule?
Introduction: 1
Well, every school enacts hundreds of rules to discipline the students and my school was not an exception.
What it is?
Though most rules were defined to benefit us in some way yet I found one rule extremely unfair and that was of no half-day and no color dress on Saturday.
Why you don’t like it? and How others feel about the rule?
The fact it that in almost every school in my city Saturday is always a half-day at school and students wait for this day eagerly as they get released for school around 12 instead of 3 pm. But, It was not in the case of my school. We had to attend the school as other days on Saturday too.
And explain whether you’ve followed the rule?
On top of it, there was an additional fine for not attending the school on Saturday as teachers used to take surprise on this day. As a result, I could never go out on a weekend break with my family. In addition, we had to wear school uniform all 6 days of the week. Where other school children could wear clothes of their choice on this day we again had to wear uniform only which always gave them a reason to laugh on us and annoy us. I was in uniform all the time and for that reason my parents rarely got me new clothes.
I can never forget that sometimes, after school on Saturdays sometimes my parents used to pick me to watch movie in cinema and I used to be the only person at cinema in uniform which used to be quite embarrassing but for movie I could manage that.
Conclusion:
Overall, like most other students I was not happy at all with this rule at my school.

Introduction: 5
To effectively run the system, rules are of utmost importance. Being a law-abiding citizen, I like most rules: however, there is one which I dislike.
What it is?
I am a student, and in my college, there is a rule that the students cannot carry their mobile phones during college trips.
The college authorities opine that mobile phones are a distraction for the students. And, using them during trips is an imprudent approach because it restricts them to focus on the trip.
Why you don’t like it?
I do not like this rule, because in this modern era mobiles phones have become an integral part of our lives. In the absence of cell phones, students feel deprived of real fun.
Students of the contemporary epoch thrive primarily on their mobile phones to capture memorable moments as selfies and pictures. And banning the phones on trips takes away this fun from them.
Moreover, parents remain worried about their kids. Because when students go on trips, parents feel safe by contacting their children at regular intervals.
Furthermore, sometimes college takes us on an educational tour. During that time phone helps to capture valuable information by clicking pictures.
How do others feel about the rule?
My classmates also express solidarity with my concern. They also feel that allowing the usage of mobile phones during trips is a prudent approach.
Whether you’ve followed the rule?
Being a disciplined person, I do not have the habit of breaking rules. Although I have challenged this rule many times by writing against it, I have never broken it.
Introduction: 6
In the contemporary epoch, most countries have democracy, and in such a setup, stringent rules and regulations are of utmost importance.
Being a responsible citizen, I abide by all the rules: however, there is one which I dislike.
What it is?
The college where I study has a co-education system: however, as per the rule, girls and boys are not allowed to sit together
Why you don’t like it?
I do not like this rule because it is not in synchronisation with the needs of modern society. In this contemporary epoch, people thrive primarily on communication, to handle their conflicts adroitly.
Moreover, there is no denying this conviction that both genders are significant pillars of our society. And when they sit and communicate, they can bridge the gap amidst them, hence keeping them away from each others company is an imprudent approach.
How do others feel about the rule?
Most students have expressed solidarity with my concern and staunchly advocate the removal of this rule.
And explain whether you’ve followed the rule?
Being a law-abiding citizen, I have rigorously followed this rule because I take it as my bounden duty. Moreover, breaking it would lead to disrespect of my teachers that I strongly condemn.
However, I have raised my voice against this rule through various social media platforms. I have planned to start a blog where I would ask for suggestions from people. And based on the response of others, I will decide my future course of action to convince the authorities to abolish it.
The days of school were best in my life but I could not comply with one of the rules and that is attending at the assembly in the early hours of the day. Serangoon Garden Secondary School is highly strict over the issue.
Now I have crossed the boundary of school and studying Diploma in Business at a local college here in Singapore but the days before attending here were awesome to many extents. But there were some unpleasant issues as well. Due to my lifestyle, it was impossible to wake early hours in the morning. My school, the SGS, started its activities from 7.20am. I had to reach my school by 7.10 am and then placing my bag in the classroom, I along with the other students in my class went to attend the flag raising ceremony and assembly. The ceremony began at 7.20am and most of the times I could not stand well for sleep in me. It was too difficult for me to wake up at 6.45am and get ready for the school and then again stand in the playground for the formalities that ended by 7.35am.
The reactions were mixed. Some of the students thought that attending the assembly was a good practice while most of the students were like me. In fact, attending the assembly would have been better if the assembly and the other events started in a bit late. It becomes difficult for most of the students to get up so early in the morning and the discipline was too strict. All of the students had to follow the rules and regulations strictly and if there were any disobedience about following the rules and regulations, strict measures were adopted as punishment for the students. Often, I have seen that many of the students are avoiding the assemblies as they are unable to stand at the playground under the sun. Sometimes they used to hide in the toilets and on the other corners of the school from where they were able to skip the ceremony.
Yes, I have often violated the rule. I did that after I got promoted to the highest grade of the school. In fact, we had a group of students who used to violate the rule. In most of the cases, we used to hide in the toilets of the schools. Besides, we also had some special places to keep ourselves hidden till the assembly ceremony was over. When the ceremony got ended, all of the students used to reach their respective classrooms following a queue and we, the naughty students, used to penetrate with them in the classrooms so that nobody could doubt us. Sometimes, we used to make late and it was a bit flexible for the students of the last grade to be a little late for the class. Besides, when we did not have the intention to attend classes, sometimes we hid at the small room located on the rooftop. When the class was finished, we got down from there and took our seats at the last benches.
From my early childhood, I was naughty and still, I am today. Thereby, my parents got me admitted to the school as its discipline is strict. The students are not allowed to go out of the rules and thus they become disciplined. But I was a bit different from the other students and remained busy in violating the rules. Though sometimes I tried to follow the rules, it was a bit difficult me to comply with all the rules. It was irritating for me to stand in a queue for the morning assembly and the most important reason was the small playground with no shade. All the students had to stand under the bare sun in the morning and some of them turned fade. I used to sweat a lot and when I stood under the sun, my school uniform got wet with my sweats. Besides, it was impossible for me to tolerate the same lectures every day at the assembly. The teachers used to make us take the pledge to do the good things and avoid the bad things. Definitely, their intentions were good but it was intolerable for me to pledge all the memorised verses in every morning. So, for all these reasons, I did not like the rule.
Introduction: 8
School days were the greatest days of my life. But there were some rules that I could not like in those days. Getting punishment for not bringing homework was one of them. This is a great topic and I would love to talk about it. The question reminds me of my childhood.
The school had a rule that if any student fails to bring the homework, s. he would be punished. Without considering the background, the teachers and the school authority imposed the rule on the students. We had no other ways left. They thought that the students want to bunk the assignments and thus they created the provision of punishment. For this provision, innocent students also had to suffer a lot.
The majority of the student were against the rule but had no way to express their opinion. I admit that there are some students who are wicked by nature and they must be punished. But forgetting to bring a homework for complying with the other courses or some other reasons and getting punished was not wanted at all. I also had fallen victim of the punishment several times only for forgetting to bring the homework. In fact, I had completed them but forgot to take them with me through the school bag. This was a usual scenario for a majority of the students. So, the provision was undesired to all.
To be honest, I tried to violate the rule but each time I failed. Actually, the teachers wanted us to be perfect human being in all terms. So, they were too careful about the homework issues. The more we showed excuses, the level of punishment increased. In fact, they did not want to believe us. One day, to avoid punishment, I told my teacher that I forgot to bring the homework and if I am allowed, I could bring that within a short time. Despite bringing the homework within next 15 minutes (my residence was adjacent to the school), I was punished.
I think this was something extreme for the young students like us. The teachers did not punish us with corporal punishment. Rather, they asked us to complete the homework standing inside the classroom. Actually, it was really annoying to compete for the homework that I did before at home. At the same time, it was impossible to focus on the class and the homework together. As a result, the students who were punished had to sacrifice the lessons of the class. To make the issue clearer, it was waste of time for the students. Still, I feel perplexed that how that type of punishment was beneficial for a student. For all the reasons, I did not like that rule in my school.
Follow up Questions
1. Why do schools make rules?
Schools make rules to maintain discipline. They are the centres of learning, where children are moulded into responsible adults. We all have to follow rules, imposed by the government, as adults. So, schools start that process of obeying rules in childhood only
2. What’s the importance of obeying law?
Without law, we would be living in utter chaos. There would be crime everywhere and life would be difficult for the common man.
