Sunny Varkey was born on 9 April 1957, in Ranni, Kerala, India. KS Varkey, his father, and Miriamma, his mother, were both Kerala Christians and educators.
The family arrived in Dubai in 1959, at a time when the emirate was still in its infancy. Both of his parents taught English to local Arabs, including members of the royal family, and his father worked for the British Bank of the Middle East.
He is the son of Indian ex-pat teachers who moved to Dubai in 1959.

Education
Sunny was sent back to Kerala at the age of four to attend Infant Jesus College, a Catholic boarding school in Kollam. To supplement his income, he sold fruit on the side of the road when he was 11 years old. Sunny moved to Dubai with his older sister in 1970, and he finished his O-Levels at St. Mary’s Catholic High School.
He studied for a year at Bembridge School in the United Kingdom and completed his A-Levels at the British Council in Dubai.
Career
With the increased demand for an English-language education for the children of Indian expatriates, Varkey’s parents established Our Own English High School in Dubai in 1968.
The discovery of oil in Dubai in 1966 brought in many foreign workers, including many from the Indian subcontinent.
Varkey was able to concentrate on education and educational philanthropy after selling his healthcare company.
Varkey Group is the holding company for GEMS Education and Varkey’s other companies, which include healthcare and manufacturing.
Varkey founded the company in 1979, and it is headquartered in Dubai, with offices in the United Kingdom, the United States, and India.
Varkey took over the running of his parents’ Our Own English High School, which had under 400 students at the time after local officials demanded that it be located in a purpose-built building in 1980.
Varkey founded Welcare, a healthcare consulting and management firm that built a number of hospitals and clinics, in 1984.
Mediclinic International bought a majority stake in Emirates Healthcare, the Varkey Group’s umbrella firm that owned Welcare, in 2012.
